One of the best ways to explore Yunnan is to visit its famous tourist destinations, such as Dali, Lijiang, and Lugu Lake. In this article, I will share my experience of traveling to these three beautiful places and provide some useful information for those who are planning to visit Yunnan.
Dali
Dali is a charming ancient town located on the banks of the Erhai Lake, about 300 kilometers northwest of Kunming, the capital of Yunnan. The town has a history of more than 1,300 years and was once an important trading post on the ancient Tea Horse Road.
When I arrived in Dali, the first thing that caught my attention was the town's unique architecture. The houses are built in the Bai ethnic style, with white walls, black tiles, and colorful paintings on the doors and windows. Another impressive sight was the ancient city wall, which stretches for about 15 kilometers around the town.
One of the must-see attractions in Dali is the Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple. These pagodas, built in the 9th century, are a masterpiece of ancient Chinese architecture. From the top of the pagodas, you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the Erhai Lake and the surrounding mountains.

Lijiang
Lijiang is another charming ancient town in Yunnan, located about 200 kilometers north of Dali. The town is famous for its well-preserved traditional architecture, canals, and stone bridges. It was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
One of the most iconic landmarks in Lijiang is the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, which towers over the town at an altitude of 5,596 meters. Despite its name, the mountain is not always covered in snow, but its peaks are always capped with clouds, giving it a mysterious and majestic appearance.
In Lijiang, I recommend visiting the Square Street (Furenlu) and the Ancient Culture Street, where you can find traditional shops, bars, and restaurants. You can also take a boat ride on the Li River, which runs through the town, and enjoy the beautiful scenery along the banks.
Lugu Lake
Located about 200 kilometers northwest of Lijiang, Lugu Lake is a beautiful highland lake that straddles the border between Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. The lake is surrounded by snow-capped mountains and is home to the Tibetans, who live in the nearby villages.
The best way to explore Lugu Lake is to take a boat tour. I rented a small boat and spent a few hours cruising around the lake, enjoying the stunning scenery and the fresh air. The lake is known for its clear water and diverse fish species, including the famous Chinese paddlefish.
Another highlight of my trip to Lugu Lake was visiting the local Tibetan villages. I had the opportunity to learn about their unique customs and traditions, such as the yak butter tea and the colorful costumes. The friendly locals were always eager to share their stories and invite visitors to join them for a meal.
